Class Descriptions

 

GEORGIA BONESTEEL— “When Our Grandmothers Were Young – The Treadle Challenge” on Thursday at 10am and 2pm, Friday at 2pm and again Saturday at 3pm. This is your opportunity to buy a completed Signature Quilt Block or sit and construct one on a Treadle Sewing Machine with Georgia Bonesteel working on her Bernina. Come have fun with Georgia and experience first-hand how our grandmothers and great grandmothers managed sewing on a treadle sewing machine! Don’t miss Georgia at Show & Tell and her exhibit walk-through as well!

 

ELEANOR BURNS — “The Magic Vine” All Day Workshop - Whimsical flowers and leaves using light-weight paper backed adhesive (Heat & Bond) or the quick turn method using non-woven fusible interfacing. Edges finished with a variety of techniques.

 

ELEANOR BURNS — “Lodgepole Pine with Cardinals” All Day Workshop from “Quilts Through the Seasons” - create fabric stripped tall tree blocks with appliquéd cardinals perched in branches.

 

ELEANOR BURNS — Lecture “Florence LaGenke as Nancy Page” – You have loved her patterns and you’ve collected her old columns from the newspapers of the 1930s. But who was Nancy Page?

 

DEBBY COONEY AND HAZEL CARTER —“Antique Quilt & Fabric Dating Workshop: Quilts of the 1800s” and “Antique Quilt & Fabric Dating from 1900-1950” 

The instructors will bring appropriate quilts and materials from their own collections for instruction purposes. Students may bring a total of 2 items to share for each workshop, if they choose (antique quilts, tops, blocks or fabrics).

 

DEBBY COONEY — “Mason v. Dixon?  Cradle Quilts of Maryland and Pennsylvania, 1820-1900” 

An examination of some similarities and differences in 19th century Maryland and Pennsylvania quilts. Debby will show examples from her collection. (90 minutes)

 

GWEN MARSTON – “Little Flower Pot Appliqué Quilts” – half-day workshop

Learn Gwen’s easy methods for designing and cutting the shapes for a small appliqué flower pot quilt as well as Gwen’s easy appliqué techniques including how to make bias. This class is easy and fun, great for all levels, even those who have shied away from appliqué. These quilts measure around 18” X 20”. Gwen will bring a group of her small flowerpot quilts for inspiration.

 

GWEN MARSTON — “Liberated Stars” – half-day workshop

No need to fear points! Liberally illustrated with Gwen’s own quilts, Gwen’s “easy-as-pie” Liberated Stars explores a perennially favorite traditional pattern.

 

GWEN MARSTON — Lecture “Mary Schafer American Quilt Maker” - learn of 2007 Honoree Mary Schafer’s life story and contributions to quiltmaking from Mary’s good friend and biographer.

 

KAREN MUSGRAVES — Quilters’ Save Our Stories (Q.S.O.S.) Workshop-Part I

Introduces participants to an enjoyable and simple way to gather and save quiltmakers’ important personal stories.

 

KAREN MUSGRAVES — Quilters’ Save Our Stories (Q.S.O.S.) Workshop-Part II

Learn by doing! Conduct an actual Q.S.O.S. interview and have the opportunity for more understanding of the project and receive hands-on support.

 

PHYLLIS TWIGG-HATCHER —“Victorian Redwork Embroidery” – half-day workshop

Hand embroider a 9 block using a classic Redwork embroidery design Phyllis’ Victorian Redwork Sampler Quilt book.  Kits will be available with dark red on a white background or white floss on a dark red.  You may, instead, choose to embroider a lily border on an 18” x 19miniature replica of an antique bed quilt.  Border kits include   choice of dark red or blue floss on a white background.

 

PHYLLIS TWIGG-HATCHER — LECTURE “Buy Me, I’m Best” Thread and sewing machine companies, dry goods stores, and many others vied for customers using novel and entertaining advertising methods. Have fun seeing sewing-related marketing efforts from 1875 onward and how they affected the quilt makers. You may bring antique or vintage items to share that possess related advertising of some type.
