The Board of Directors elected Karen B. Alexander to be our next president when our beloved
founding president, Hazel Carter, stepped down in July 2005. We are grateful that Hazel will
remain on the Board and continue working with the Program Committee to develop new exhibits
for Marie Webster House and other venues.
Karen, a member of the American Quilt Study Groups since 1981, has a special passion for quilt
history. She co-founded a children’s needlework guild in Richmond, Virginia, in the early 80’s;
was instrumental in persuading the national PTA to allow needlework in its annual school arts
contest in the mid80s; has written book chapters and articles for both quilt and genealogy
publications; presents lectures on quilt history; and has curated quilt exhibits. She has been a
member of The Quilters Hall of Fame since 1995 and served as Press Secretary since 2001.
Karen grew up in Ohio, but says her heart is in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, where her
Mennonite roots (discovered through her genealogical research) go back to 1740. She acquired
her interest in textiles as a result of living in both Asia and Africa as a teenager. Also a quilt
maker and a collector -- specializing in three counties in the Shenandoah Valley, plus crib and
doll quilts, she has left her mark on two guild newsletters in different states as a result of
winning two logo design contests and “name our newsletter” contests: the Richmond Quilters
Guild of Richmond, VA, and the Gulf State Quilters Association (encompassing LA, MS, FL and
AL). Karen is an enthusiastic supporter of Q-SOS (Quilters: Save Our Stories), an arm of The
Alliance for the American Quilt, and collects quilters’ stories in the islands of the Pacific
Northwest where she now resides. She and her editor/musician husband, Gary, met through
music and continue to be enthusiastic choral singers, and are the proud parents of two
daughters and one son, and the grandparents of five.
Karen’s love of adventure, charming personality, and passion for quilts, as well as her dedication
to the mission of The Quilters Hall of Fame, will serve her well as she takes on this important
new role.
